Choosing the right connectivity approach involves real engineering trade-offs. Here are two common decision points our application engineers encounter.
Both connection technologies are widely used in IEC 61439-compliant assemblies. The choice depends on your panel building workflow, vibration environment, and maintenance access requirements.
Phoenix Contact recommendation: We offer both technologies across our full terminal block range. Push-in is preferred for high-volume panel shops and vibration-prone applications; screw-clamp remains the practical choice where field maintenance access is limited or conductor types vary widely.
Global projects often face the challenge of dual-standard compliance. IEC and UL testing methodologies differ in test conditions, marking requirements, and market acceptance.
Phoenix Contact approach: All terminal blocks and connectors in our standard catalog carry both IEC and UL certifications. For custom assemblies, we advise specifying target markets upfront — dual certification adds 4-6 weeks to the development timeline and approximately 15-20% to certification costs.
Every product has operating boundaries. Understanding these limits is essential for safe and reliable installations.
Terminal blocks rated at 232A achieve this rating at 20°C ambient. At 55°C (common in enclosed panels without active cooling), rated current must be derated by 20-30% per IEC 60947-7-1 derating curves. Always verify ambient conditions before specifying.
IP67 ratings apply only when connectors are fully mated and locking mechanisms engaged. Unmated connectors exposed to washdown or submersion environments will not maintain the rated ingress protection. Consider IP69K rated options for high-pressure washdown applications.
Push-in terminals require solid or ferrule-terminated stranded conductors (0.14 - 6 mm²). Fine-stranded flexible cables without ferrules may not achieve the required pull-out force (>50N per IEC 60947-7-1). In high-vibration environments (railway EN 61373 Category 1), use spring-loaded variants with retention clips.
Standard polyamide (PA 6.6) housings resist most industrial oils and coolants but degrade when exposed to concentrated acids (pH < 2) or certain chlorinated solvents. For chemical processing environments, request our ATEX-rated stainless steel enclosure options with PTFE gaskets.
Dielectric strength and creepage distances are specified for altitudes up to 2,000 meters above sea level. Installations above 2,000m require voltage derating per IEC 60664-1 — contact our engineering team for site-specific calculations.
While 96% of standard catalog items ship within 48 hours, custom-assembled terminal strips and special plating options (tin, silver, gold) require 10-15 business days. ATEX/IECEx certified custom assemblies may require 6-8 weeks due to third-party inspection requirements.
