Phoenix Contact 1274118, Switch 2000 & TopTherm: A Buyer's Guide for Small Industrial Orders

I'm not an engineer. I'm the person who processes the purchase orders when engineers request parts. If your application is basically “I need to switch a signal from a PLC to a contactor,” you don't need a managed Ethernet switch. You need a relay—or maybe a relay terminal block. If you need VLANs or redundancy protocols, then you'd step up to a managed switch—but that's a different budget conversation.

Scenario 3: Keeping Enclosures Cool → TopTherm

The one that surprised me was TopTherm. I initially thought it was a brand of heating elements. Actually, it's Phoenix Contact's line of enclosure climate control—air conditioners and heat exchangers for control cabinets. When our new dust-proof enclosure had overheating issues in July, the engineer specified a TopTherm unit. It wasn't the cheapest option, but it was the one that fit the enclosure dimensions and had the right cooling capacity.

Looking back, I should have asked more questions earlier. At the time, I focused only on the price difference between a fan and an air conditioner. But the fan couldn't keep the dust seal, and the AC did. That was a $1,200 mistake—I had to double the order.

  2. Does that network need to be configured or managed? No → Switch 2000 family (3310, 2780, etc.). Yes → ask the engineer for a managed switch part number.
  3. Will the enclosure have heat issues? If it's sealed or exposed to ambient heat, consider TopTherm before you approve a fan-only solution.

Small doesn't mean unimportant. When I was starting out, the vendors who treated our small orders seriously are the ones I still call for bigger ones. Same goes for part numbers: a $90 relay can keep a $90,000 line running, so don't dismiss the “little” components.

Of course, this is from a buyer's perspective, not an engineering spec. Don't hold me to the exact technical details—check the data sheets. But if you're in procurement and someone hands you “phoenix-contact 1274118” or “switch 2000” on a requisition, at least you'll know what bucket it belongs in.
